2010 11th Annual  Buffalo Girls CASI Chili Cookoff was a major success. Winners are posted by NETA ROHR, whom we owe a great big thank you for helping for 11 straight years.

Buffalo Girls Hotel Draws a Record 68 Cooks
The smell of chili was definitely in the air at the 11th Annual CASI Chili Cookoff, held Saturday April 3rd. CASI members traveled from as far as New Mexico to enter this year's cookoff. Every year we have new cooks enter, but this year we had a record turnout with 68 cooks. Not everyone was a CASI member. Several local cooks placed in the top ten chili entries. CASI members travel to cookoffs almost every weekend to win points to be invited to the superbowl of cookoff's in Terlingua, Texas. Their motto is "cooking chili for charity". All of the money collected on entries, drawing money, and auction items, went to CLAW, (Citizens League For Animal Welfare). This money is used to vet, spay, neuter dogs & cats, and educate the public about the importance of spaying, neutering, and adopting rescued pets pulled from kill shelters. The adoption fees only cover half of the expenses from each animal, so this helps make ends meet. CLAW is a non-profit, 501-c organization that depends on donations to continue its mission.

"This was our biggest year ever, even being Easter weekend," explains Susan Matassa, owner of the Buffalo Girls Hotel. "We had cooks coming out of the woodwork, and we couldn't be happier!" " I started this cookoff in 2000 for 2 reasons.....first to honor my late parents who gave generously to all charities, and second to bring exposure to The Mountain. Most of these CASI cooks are just looking for a cookoff to enter for points, but they had no idea that The Mountain existed, but after 11 years, they all come back and new ones are added to the list. Last year we had 50 and thought that was huge, but this year we had an amazing 68 cooks. They tell me it is the most fun of them all because it is during 1st Monday and their friends & family like to come and shop. They have also heard about the great raffle & auction items donated by The Mountain vendors and business's here in Canton, not to mention the dog lover's that participate. The Girl Scouts helped out again this year with a bake sale and even baked little dog treats that all sold out. We had Walmart & CLAW volunteers helping to coordinate the event, David Cline & friends were the entertainment,  & David Hayes was our auctioneer who holds quilt auctions every 1st Monday on The Mountain. There are so many people to thank that we cannot list them all, but if you donated an item, bought a raffle ticket, a baked item, donated prizes, or your time......we thank you very much. Thanks to Debbie Davis, owner of Old Mill Marketplace, for allowing the volunteers and chili cooks to park free, and to RC & Sherron Bridges for bringing their pet buffalo, Wildthing, to the event for the 3rd straight year. Thank you Brookshires & Walmart for donating the food & drinks for the chili judges. Since we had so many cooks, our judging schedule was a bit off, but most of you hung in there & I must say....a job well done. Thanks for your time.

We are very dog friendly and will work with you and your dog for just the right room.

We are just a few blocks from the main grounds, but have several shopping areas just outside your door. The Villages are climate controlled, individual shops all built together next to the 7 pavilions at Old Mill Marketplace. Dog Alley is just across the street and The Buffalo Girls Hotel is located at the base of The Mountain where you can shop, stroll the lighted streets, eat in one of our many eateries, or sing Karoke till 10pm on Friday & Saturday of 1st Monday. Artists, craftsmen, candle makers, blacksmiths, and period characters are all on hand for your enjoyment and entertainment. Live quilt auctions, old west re-enactments and a variety of singers can also be found on The Mountain..

Howdy,

Welcome to the Buffalo Girls Hotel Bed & Breakfast in Canton, Texas. We began in 1995 as vendor rentals and eventually added bathrooms, beds & unique western, antique, southwest & Texas furnishings to make each room different. We named most rooms after characters in the movie "Buffalo Girls" and offered them to the shoppers of Canton since all we heard was, "We can't see it all in one day."

"Calamity" AKA Susan Matassa
Owner & Your Hostess

So, as a service to you, we offer clean comfortable rooms, complete with heat & a/c, private baths, cable TV, balconies, or large porches overlooking the Mountain shops & breakfast discounts at The Buffalo Girls Cafe, downstairs  next to the lobby & Gift Shop. We accept kids & pets as long as they are both "house trained."

We have clean, fresh sheets & towels but DO NOT change them daily. We have fresh towels available in the lobby upon request. Since we are small, sometimes we run out of towels or ice, but if you give us a while...we'll get them. Since we were shops before rooms...if you run the hair dryer heaters or a/c at the same time...you will blow a fuse...but we will gladly re-set it for you. No problem...you definitely weren't the first one. We have cable TV, but also  have  VCR's in each room with free movies in the lobby to take to your room, as well as games, cards and books, & tall tales!!

We are located on highway 64, 2 blocks from the square at OLD MILL MARKETPLACE, on THE MOUNTAIN. The Mountain is a shaded hillside with little shops of all kinds built to look like old time pioneer & western dwellings. Food, entertainment, and vendors, as well as real live cowboys, can all be found on THE MOUNTAIN and most can be seen right from your own balcony. Most stores stay open at night for your shopping enjoyment and live entertainment can be seen at Cline's Corner, starring David Cline himself, and at 45 LIVE in the old Dodge City Complex. Food is EVERYWHERE & FUN is in the air!!! Come experience 1st Monday with The Buffalo Girls and have the time of your life.

Food & entertainment is within walking distance and parking is close. All parking lots are owned by others so you should get a weekend pass for $5.00 instead of paying $4.00 for each entry. Ask the attendant about it.

We are located in a dry county, but you are welcome to bring the beverages of your choice with you. If we are ever too loud for you (our guests)... Please don't hesitate to complain. We are here for you and you pay our bills...So please let us know your concerns, as it helps us to serve you better in the future.

If I can help you in any way or if you have a special request for a birthday, anniversary or just want it to be "Special"... let us know. We can add balloons, room service, or the card of your choice. If you can dream it.. we can make it happen.
